Positive Behavioural Supports

Positive Behaviour Support Planning & Functional Behaviour Assessment

We provide specialist Positive Behaviour Support planning, Functional Behaviour Assessments and behavioural consultation for children, young people and adults with complex support needs. Sheree is a Registered Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner with advanced and specialist practitioner standing, bringing extensive experience across disability, child protection, out-of-home care, therapeutic services, mental health and complex clinical environments.

Our approach is grounded in the understanding that behaviour occurs for a reason and within a context. Behaviour may communicate distress, unmet need, attempts to regulate emotion, experiences of trauma, difficulty accessing or communicating needs, responses to relationships and environments, or skills that have not yet been developed. Effective behaviour support therefore requires more than describing behaviour, identifying risk or developing strategies to manage incidents. It requires disciplined assessment of the person, their experiences, relationships, developmental history, environment, communication, strengths and skills, and the conditions that influence how behaviour emerges and is responded to.

Functional Behaviour Assessment & Behavioural Formulation

Functional Behaviour Assessment is central to high-quality Positive Behaviour Support. We undertake comprehensive assessment to develop an evidence-informed understanding of the function and meaning of behaviour, the conditions under which it is more or less likely to occur, and the factors that may be contributing to its development and continuation.

Our assessment approach brings together direct observation, interviews and consultation, behavioural data, incident patterns, developmental and psychosocial history, trauma and attachment experiences, communication and sensory needs, environmental factors, relationships, health and wellbeing information, previous interventions and the perspectives of the person and those who know them well.

Sheree brings particular expertise in behavioural analysis and clinical formulation. Her approach examines not only what happens before and after behaviour, but the broader context in which behaviour has developed. This includes consideration of setting events, antecedents, consequences, reinforcement patterns, emotional and physiological states, skill deficits, environmental demands, relational dynamics, trauma responses and the behaviour of the people and systems surrounding the individual.

Assessment findings are integrated into a clear behavioural formulation that explains the available evidence, identifies likely behavioural functions and maintaining factors, acknowledges uncertainty and competing hypotheses where they exist, and provides a clinically reasoned basis for intervention.

Positive Behaviour Support Plans

We develop comprehensive, person-centred Positive Behaviour Support Plans that translate assessment and behavioural formulation into practical, evidence-informed intervention.

A high-quality Behaviour Support Plan should not be a collection of generic strategies or a document developed primarily to respond to behaviour after escalation has occurred. It should provide the people supporting the individual with a clear understanding of the person, the function and context of behaviour, the conditions that support wellbeing and participation, and the proactive interventions required to reduce the likelihood that behaviours of concern will need to occur.

Our plans focus on improving quality of life, strengthening communication and functional skills, increasing choice and autonomy, modifying environments, building safe and supportive relationships, improving consistency of support and developing proactive strategies that address the identified function of behaviour.

Where reactive strategies are required, these are proportionate, clearly defined and designed to protect safety while maintaining dignity and using the least intrusive response possible.

Positive Behaviour Support Plans are living clinical documents. Behaviour, environments, relationships and support needs change over time. Plans therefore require implementation support, data-informed monitoring, review of outcomes and revision when strategies are ineffective, circumstances change or new information becomes available.

Trauma-Informed & Developmentally Responsive Behaviour Support

Trauma-informed practice is integral to our approach.

Behaviour cannot be meaningfully understood without considering what a person has experienced, how they have adapted to those experiences, what creates safety or threat for them and how the responses of others influence what happens next.

Sheree brings extensive experience working with children and young people who have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, disrupted relationships, placement instability and complex service systems. Her practice integrates behavioural science with trauma-informed, developmental, relational and systemic approaches.

This allows behaviour support to move beyond narrowly focused behavioural interventions and consider the whole person, including their history, identity, culture, relationships, strengths, skills and environment.

Specialist Behaviour Support for Toddlers, Children & Young People

Sheree's primary area of specialist practice is with children and young people.

Her approach recognises that children's behaviour must be understood developmentally and within the context of their relationships and environments. Children should not be expected to demonstrate skills they have not yet had the opportunity, support or safety to develop.

Assessment and intervention therefore consider developmental capacity, communication, emotional regulation, trauma, attachment and relational experiences, sensory needs, environmental demands, family and carer responses, placement dynamics, educational environments and the broader professional systems surrounding the child.

We work collaboratively with children and young people, families, foster and kinship carers, support workers, schools, clinicians, caseworkers and multidisciplinary teams to develop shared behavioural understanding and consistent approaches to support.

Behaviour Support Consultation, Plan Review & Practice Improvement

We also provide specialist behavioural consultation to practitioners, teams and organisations where behaviour support has become complex, interventions are not producing meaningful change or there are concerns about restrictive, reactive or risk-driven practice.

Sheree can undertake independent review of existing Behaviour Support Plans and Functional Behaviour Assessments, provide second opinions on behavioural formulation, analyse patterns of incidents and restrictive practice use, facilitate complex case consultation and support teams to strengthen the quality and clinical defensibility of behavioural assessment and intervention.

For organisations, we provide behavioural practice review, workforce development, reflective consultation and specialist advice to strengthen Positive Behaviour Support capability, implementation quality, clinical governance and compliance.

Our work is grounded in a clear principle: behaviour should be understood before it is managed.
